Mr Egun is an indigene of Ogbemudein quarters in Ime-Obi, Ika South Local Government Area, Delta state. His education began at St Patrick’s Catholic School, Agbor Town, where he obtained a primary six leaving certificate (distinction) in 1973. Although Mr Egun was offered numerous admissions into several secondary schools, his preference was Ika Grammar School (IGS) because of its academic and sports reputation. He was admitted into IGS in 1973/74 session and assigned to Ikenchukwu House. He was later appointed Senior Prefect of the 1978 set. Mr Egun participated actively in sports, debating society and representing IGS in Bendel state quiz competitions. He left IGS with an aggregate 13 school certificate. Due to WAEC’s cancellation of mathematics in 1978, Mr Egun took up a teaching job in Ika Grammar School, enabling him to resit the school certificate examination in 1979, passing with Grade one certificate. Taking up an English language teaching job at a very young age gave him a further opportunity to bond with the future generations of IGS. This enabled a warm relationship with so many individuals that still exist today.
In 1980, Mr Egun was admitted into King’s College, Lagos, for his Higher school Certificate (HSC). At Kings, he was appointed House Captain of Payne House and was a member of the school athletic relay and football teams.
Mr Egun was admitted into the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos in 1982. He won numerous academic prizes at medical school, graduating as a medical doctor in 1987 with honours. He was subsequently offered a one year internship as a house officer at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Benin City, Bendel state.
On completion of his year internship in UBTH, he proceeded to General Hospital Iperu, Ijebu, Ogun state for his NYSC. He was a national award winner as a youth copper in 1989. This was in recognition of his efforts as a young doctor in providing surgical and obstetric cover to numerous health centres in the Ijebu Remo area of Ogun state.
On completion of his NYSC, he worked briefly in a private hospital in Lagos before travelling to the United Kingdom for Surgical specialisation in 1990. Following a successful PLAB examination in the same year, Mr Egun obtained his UK General Medical Council registration. He was appointed into the prestigious King’s College Hospital, London Senior House Officer Surgical rotations from 1991 to 1994. On completion of the rotation in 1994, Mr Egun passed his Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons examination and was awarded FRCS (Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons). This enabled him to gain a higher surgical training post in the NorthWest of England. From 1995 to 2001, Mr Egun rotated through numerous teaching and district hospitals in the NorthWest region. He was awarded a Completion Certificate of Surgical Training (CCST) in 2002 on passing the FRCS (Gen. Surg.) exit examination. From 1998 -2001, during his Higher Surgical training, Mr Egun was appointed Senior Research Fellow and Hon. Lecturer at the University of Manchester, UK. Mr Egun has presented in many national and international surgical conferences and is an author of several peer reviewed published literature. In preparation for and, during his consultant Surgeon career, Mr Egun has undertaken and been awarded several diplomas and certificates from universities and Royal Colleges in the UK. These include postgraduate certificates in education, audit and effectiveness, and advanced leadership certificates from Liverpool Moore University.
In 2003, Mr Egun was appointed Consultant General and Vascular Surgeon in Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Preston, Lancashire, England. Focusing on the provision of only vascular surgery services to the population of Lancashire and South Cumbria since 2011. Mr Egun has provided leadership to different areas of surgery directorate, including clinical governance, audit and effectiveness, and education. Mr Egun served as the Royal College of Surgeons Surgical Tutor for Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust from 2011 to 2015, helping to mentor and direct the training of young surgical Trainees in his hospital. In 2013, Mr Egun was appointed Honourary Senior Lecturer by Manchester University Medical school, UK, in recognition of his academic achievements and role in the training programme of medical students. Mr Egun is a member of the Court of Examiners of the Joint Royal College of Surgeons of UK and Ireland in the membership (MRCS) and fellowship (FRCS) examinations. He participates regularly in the examination of young surgeons and question settings, enabling quality and standard assurances. Mr Egun is an active member of the National Interview Selection Board, responsible for selecting Core and Higher Surgical trainees into existing programmes in the UK. He is a faculty member of the Salford University MSc programme. He led the 4th module of Vascular Surgery Emergency and Trauma since its inception in 2016 and appointed the Programme Director in 2018. He is also a faculty member of the Alpine FRCS course, which prepares Trainee Surgeons for their final exit examination in Great Britain and Ireland.
In 2015 following the reconfiguration of vascular services in Lancashire and South Cumbria, Mr Egun was appointed the first Clinical Director (CD) of the new Vascular Directorate at Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. As the first CD, Mr Egun led the reconfiguration of the Vascular services in the region creating Audit and Effectiveness, Safety and Quality, Educational, Zonal and Endovascular leads.This led to the provision of first class Vascular service to the region. In 2020, in recognition of his leadership role in the hospital, he was appointed the Associate Divisional Medical Director of Surgery. Mr Egun, in this capacity, leads the Safety and Quality, Workforce, and Surgical Assessment Unit of the entire Surgery Division. He is also responsible for managing the clinical directors of the different Directorates of Surgery.
Mr Egun represents his NHS Foundation Trust in the Vascular Programme Board in the Lancashire and South Cumbria regions and is a current member of the National Small Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Board in Lancashire and South Cumbria. Mr Egun is currently a director of the Vascular Society charity and circulation foundation in the UK and Ireland.
In December 2021, Mr Egun was elected by his peers into the Vascular Society Council of Great Britain and Ireland. This is the governing Council of his Surgical speciality. Mr Egun is now looking forward to helping shape the vision and direction of the vascular society in the coming years. In 2022, Mr Egun was appointed to the board of the Joint Committee of Intercollegiate Examination (JCIE) of the UK and Ireland. Mr Egun has numerous NHS Clinical Excellence Awards (CEA) in recognition of his many contributions to the NHS, training, leadership, and teaching.
Mr Egun was chairman of BOT in the defunct IGSOBA Reconnect WhatsApp group. This was the group that was responsible for providing a forum for the local, national, and international collaboration that led to the current IGSOBA community. He is currently the chairman of the finance and fundraising committee of IGSOBA. He serves as a BOT member of IGSOBA.
